Our reading
Only a few claims are firm
Google has said little about how AI Overviews pick links, and what it has said is plain: ordinary search eligibility applies. Everything finer than that comes from outside studies that disagree with each other.
Stated by Google: indexed and snippet-eligible pages can be linked
Observed by outsiders: results shift by query, date and location
Guessed: link counts, schema and author bios as direct levers

Why the middle rows are slippery
Every outside study samples differently. One looks at 10,000 informational keywords in the US. Another takes a few hundred branded searches. Their citation shares can differ by tens of points, and neither is wrong.
Google also changes the feature. It launched AI Overviews in the US on 14 May 2024, trimmed them after odd answers in the following weeks, then widened them again. A study from 2024 describes a product that has since moved.
Fan-out matters too. For AI Mode, Google described issuing many related searches behind one question in May 2025. If that is how sources get gathered, the page you are watching may be cited for a query you never tracked.
Hence our caution. We lean on the link-profile pull only for comparison. It tells you what cited domains look like, not why they were chosen. For the dated background, read the AI search timeline.
Related questions
Can I tell if Google uses links to choose AI Overview sources?
Not from outside. Google has not published a source-selection recipe. Because Overviews draw on the search index, links probably matter indirectly through normal ranking, but no controlled test separates that effect from content quality or brand strength.
Why does my page show up in an overview one day and not the next?
Overviews are regenerated, and the result set shifts with time, location and wording. Treat one sighting as noise. Log the same ten queries weekly for a month before concluding anything about your page.
Is being first in classic results enough?
No. Many reports show overviews citing pages ranked lower, and some top results are skipped. Ranking well helps you get considered, but it is not a ticket. Clear, self-contained passages seem to help with extraction.
Does Search Console report AI Overview clicks?
Google folds traffic from AI features into the normal Performance report and does not give a separate overview filter. You can log sightings by hand or with a third-party tracker, keeping in mind that tracker data is also sampled.
